These were in the Opuntia genus however they have now got their own. They range from southern Argentina to northern Peru and at an altitude of up to 11,500'.
Tephrocactus articulatus have a number of varieties with some being without spines but having the glochids. These come from western Argentina and as you can see from this ones spines, their common name is Paper Spine Cactus. The picture on the left-hand side was taken in 2002 with the other one taken in 2005.
